Romantic Getaway at Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel

Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel awaited us. I was anxious to arrive and show off this beautiful gem to my boyfriend who was exploring this part of Costa Rica for the first time. I gushed about the hotel and the surrounding area during our drive there. I turned into the driveway at the hotel, and we were immediately greeted as we stepped out of the car, fresh towels and a tropical drink. Heaven! The Balinese inspired décor and lush greenery welcomed us as we checked in.

The guest rooms were even nicer than I remembered, spacious, private balcony, huge bathroom, and my favorite, the outdoor shower surrounded by a lovely garden. I wanted to check out the short walk to the Rio Celeste River that is inside their grounds, it was a bit past lunchtime and it started to drizzle. We came back in for raincoats, then almost backed out when rain got a bit heavier. I said let’s go, it’s the cloud forest! We headed down the Armadillo Trail and after a few minutes the rain had stopped and the sunlight started filtering through the trees, so happy we went for it! After a short walk, we were sitting on the edge of the water, listening to the calming sounds of the river and inhaling the crisp clean air. Next on our agenda, a couple’s massage. Our therapists took lovely care of us, using scented oils and giving us a beautiful relaxing message which made us sleepy and we napped until dinnertime.

The hotel recommended we do the hike into the Volcan Tenorio National Park early in the morning, as the chances to see wildlife were greatly improved. We had an early breakfast and set off at about 8am. Our guide showed us where the trail’s vegetation morphed from rain forest to cloud forest, the altitude higher and the canopies above getting thicker. His trained ears led us to birds and his eyes found even the smallest of insects. If you’d like a short walk and instant gratification you can go directly to the spectacular waterfall. If you’d like to hike further in, passing geysers along the way, and reach the “Teñideros”, where two rivers carrying different minerals meet, it is worth it. If you thought the photos you´d seen in magazines or online were altered, this is when you know the real sight is even more breathtaking. The loop back around rewards you with the powerful cascade of light blue liquid bordered with lush dark green vegetation.

Once back at the hotel, still excited over our hike, we took a quick shower a decided to hit the pool and Jacuzzi. The cool breeze felt refreshing, and suddenly next to us we were asked whether we wanted a drink. Of course, cocktails by the pool after an energizing hike. It was date night again, so another romantic dinner Kantala Restaurant awaited. Wine paired with prosciutto wrapped salmon on a bed of lentils and spinach and asparagus. Amazing combination of flavors and textures. Attentive service, lush exotic surroundings and my partner at my side, one of the best romantic getaways we’ve had.
