What is sustainable tourism?

The definition of sustainable tourism per the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is: "Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities".

Certification for Sustainable Tourism - CST

This program designed by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), categorizes and differentiates companies in the tourism industry according to the level in which their operation gets closer to a sustainability model. They consider management of natural, cultural and social resources.

At Rio Celeste Hideaway, we have pledged to incorporate sustainable practices in our daily operations. We are aware that any activity has an impact on its surrounding environment, which is why we are committed to developing activities in an eco-friendly manner and to improving every day regarding sustainable practices.

Environmental Policy

To be a tropical refuge where our guests may rest and enjoy a stay based on satisfying their expectations through attention to detail which makes a difference, always aware of our commitment to the social and natural environment that surrounds us.

Our practices

  • Over 95% of our collaborators are neighbors from local communities.
  • Our gardens are chemical-free.
  • We support the work done by the Volcan Tenorio National Park.
  • Residual waters are treated in a biodigestor through the application of biocatalysts.
  • We have implemented the reduce, reuse and recycle material policy.
  • We have plans in place to save energy and water as well as the necessary tools to achieve our goals.
  • We offset our carbon footprint.
  • We support local communities. We have adopted the neighboring La Paz School, teaching kids about recycling and protecting mother earth. We also involve our guests in social welfare programs benefitting the community.
  • We have a greenhouse where we cultivate part of the greens and vegetables used on our kitchen.
  • We support small local producers; the yogurt, jams and pastries served at breakfast are prepared by women entrepreneurs from the towns of La Paz and El Pilon.
  • Hotel bathrooms and bathtubs are equipped with biodegradable amenities.
  • Our tour operators are companies led by area entrepreneurs.

How to get involved

We motivate you to implement the following steps, with the objective of preserving natural resources:

  • Use water rationally and use refillable bottles. The hotel’s water is 100% potable; lab tests are done on a regular basis.
  • If you would like to have your bath towels replaced, leave them on the floor and we will gladly replace them.
  • We are part of a rigorous recycling plan, and waste separators may be found in guest rooms as well as public areas.
  • Please do not feed the wild animals, or extract any plants from any natural protected area.
  • Be part of fair trade: purchase at small businesses and local companies, this contributes to the growth and wellness of local families.

Climate Change Mitigation

The same natural riches housed in Latin America and especially Central America make this region of the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change. This is why, in conjunction with our collaborators and guests, we carry out actions to mitigate and compensate the greenhouse gas emissions. Apart from having approximately 12 hectares of primary and secondary forest in our grounds, this year we planted 88 native trees through the ACC program, mitigating our carbon footprint for 2017. The airline industry is responsible for 5% of the CO2 emissions worldwide, which is why me motivate our guests to compensate the carbon footprint product of their air travel. Pack for a purpose

We are members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows tourists to create a positive impact in the communities they visit.
