Hiking Rio Celeste and Tenorio National Park

According to legend, when God finished painting the sky, he washed his brushes in the river that now bears the name Rio Celeste (light blue river). Enjoy this legendary river on this hike!

We start off from the hotel at 8:00 a.m. When we get to the park, we start our hike through this beautiful ecosystem, which offers the chance to see animals and flora. Along the walk we will come across the magnificent Rio Celeste waterfall, and also the place where the river gains its amazing light blue color. Finally we arrive at the natural hot springs. Bathing is not allowed into the National Park.

Note on the Rio Celeste: It is possible that during extreme weather conditions of ongoing, long-lasting, heavy rains, the river may lose its coloration due to mud carried in the water. However, about 5 or 6 hours of calm weather can restore the expected blue color. Otherwise, Rio Celeste can be visited any time of the year.

Birdwatching Tour

Don’t miss one of the most diverse ecosystems in Costa Rica! Bring your binoculars and you might spot the rare Tody Motmot, with its beautiful turquoise, green and rusty colored plumage. Or you might see other rare species like the Black-faced Antthrush or hear its distinctive song. Other bird species in the area include tanagers, toucans, parakeets, parrots, hawks or woodcreepers, easily found as we walk the trails or secluded gravel roads. Tenorio River White Water Rafting

The white, pristine water of the Guanacaste area makes for a beautiful river on which to raft. The water rises at Tenorio Volcano by the Guanacaste mountain range, and the area offers about 20 kilometers of rapids and a magnificent tropical forest landscape.

You don’t need prior rafting experience but this is class III and IV whitewater rafting. Our experienced staff will make you feel confident and our modern and certified equipment will allow you to mount the rapids smoothly.

Rio Frio Kayak Safari

Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs

First we’ll embark on a 2-hour drive through some of the most beautiful scenery of this agricultural region. When we arrive at La Fortuna, we’ll see the magnificent Arenal Volcano, emerging from the San Carlos plains. The last time the volcano erupted was in 1968.

Walk the trails of the Arenal Volcano National Park -- a 3-kilometer trail that lasts about two hours. You will also have the opportunity to walk along the 1992 lava flow and learn more about volcanoes in Costa Rica. Next, enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants in town with a view of the volcano. After a delicious meal we’ll head to the hot springs, where you’ll have ample time to relax your mind and body in the warm, therapeutic water, surrounded by lush nature and a forest setting. CaƱo Negro Wildlife

We’ll drive through one of the most important agricultural areas on the north side of the country, the Caribbean slopes, to arrive at Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. This ecosystem is known for its bird watching. Caño Negro is also home to many wild animals, including sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats and a variety of flora native to these wetlands. Caño Negro is known for being a migratory bird sanctuary. During the months of November through March, all kinds of birds make this one of their migratory spots.

Travel from the hotel to Caño Negro lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes. This rustic village is near the border with Nicaragua. Here we begin our boat tour that goes slowly upstream, stopping along the way to observe the animals. Around noon we will stop at a nice local restaurant for a typical Costa Rican lunch before we start our return trip to Bijagua.

Hanging Bridges

The geographical location, the weather, the temperature and rainfall of this privately owned reserve makes this walk unforgettable.

The trail will bring you through the forest – a paradise for birdwatchers! The Tenorio area is home to some 350 bird species out of about 820 found in the whole country. You’ll likely spot monkeys and sloths, too. The walk takes you over three hanging bridges that connect the 2.2 km trail, giving you a perspective of the forest that only scientists used to get, at a height of above 50 meters.
